Ghana Passport Services in the Netherlands

Whether you live in Amsterdam Zuidoost, Rotterdam, or a small town in Friesland, every Ghana passport application in the Netherlands goes through the Embassy of Ghana in The Hague. This guide explains how renewals, first-time applications, child passports, and lost passport replacements work from the Netherlands.

How the Process Works from the Netherlands

Ghana issues biometric passports, and biometric capture — fingerprints and a photograph — must be done in person. That means at least one visit to the chancery at Laan Copes van Cattenburch 70 in The Hague. There is no Ghana consulate in Amsterdam or Rotterdam, so plan a trip to The Hague; from most of the Randstad this is under an hour by train to Den Haag Centraal.

The typical sequence is:

1. Prepare your application. Ghana operates an online passport application portal (passport.mfa.gov.gh); many applicants complete the form online before attending. The embassy can confirm whether online pre-registration is currently required for applications lodged in The Hague.
2. Book an appointment. Contact the embassy by phone (+31 70 338 4384), email (thehague@mfa.gov.gh), or via thehague.mfa.gov.gh. Walk-in availability is not guaranteed, and demand from the large Ghanaian community in the Netherlands can make waits longer around holiday travel periods.
3. Attend in person with your documents for biometric capture and payment.
4. Wait for printing in Accra. Completed applications are forwarded to the Passport Application Centre in Accra. Standard processing takes about 6-8 weeks; express handling, where offered, may shorten this to 3-4 weeks. The embassy notifies you when the new passport arrives in The Hague for collection.

Documents You Will Need

Requirements vary slightly by application type, but applicants in the Netherlands should generally prepare:

• Current or expired Ghana passport (for renewals)

• Completed application form
• Four passport photographs on a white background
• Proof of residence in the Netherlands — a Dutch residence permit (verblijfsvergunning), or a BRP registration extract (uittreksel) from your gemeente is typically suitable

Fees and Processing Times

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets standard passport fees for missions abroad at approximately $50 USD for a 32-page passport and $75 USD for a 48-page passport, with express options costing more. Fees at the The Hague embassy are charged in local currency equivalents and payment methods vary — confirm the current amount and accepted payment method with the Netherlands mission before your appointment. Child passports cost the same as adult passports.

Child Passports

Children need their own passports; they cannot travel on a parent’s document. For a child born in the Netherlands to at least one Ghanaian parent, register the birth with the embassy first (bring the Dutch birth certificate issued by the gemeente, both parents’ passports, and the parents’ marriage certificate if applicable). Both parents normally must consent to a minor’s passport application, and the child must attend for biometric capture. If one parent cannot attend, ask the embassy what consent documentation it accepts.

Lost or Stolen Passport in the Netherlands

If your Ghana passport is lost or stolen anywhere in the Netherlands:

1. Report it to the Dutch police. For theft, file a report (aangifte) at a police station or via politie.nl; call 0900-8844 for a non-emergency appointment. Obtain the written police report — the embassy will ask for it.
2. Contact the embassy in The Hague to report the loss so the passport can be flagged, and to start a replacement application.
3. If you must travel urgently to Ghana, apply for an Emergency Travel Certificate, typically issued within 24-48 hours with a police report, two photographs, proof of identity (a photocopy of the lost passport or your Ghana Card helps greatly), and the fee.

Keep digital copies of your passport data page and Ghana Card — replacement is far smoother when you can prove your identity and previous passport number.

Collection and Tracking

When your passport returns from Accra, the embassy will contact you using the details on your application — make sure your Dutch phone number and email are current, and inform the mission if you move house mid-application. Collection is normally in person at The Hague; ask at submission whether the embassy currently offers postal return within the Netherlands, and if so, whether you should supply a tracked, registered envelope. Your old passport is usually cancelled and returned to you; keep it, as old passports help prove travel history for Dutch naturalisation files and future visa applications.

Renewal Timing Advice for Residents of the Netherlands

Dutch immigration procedures (IND appointments, residence permit renewals, naturalisation applications) and airlines generally require a passport that is valid for your entire stay or at least six months beyond travel. Because standard processing runs 6-8 weeks — and can stretch further in busy periods — start your renewal at least three to four months before expiry, and before booking December travel to Ghana, when demand from the diaspora peaks.
