Accra Weekend Getaway 2026

Ghana's capital is vibrant, welcoming and compact enough to experience in a long weekend. This Friday-to-Sunday itinerary covers the historic Jamestown neighbourhood, the cultural highlights, a day trip to either Cape Coast or the Aburi Botanical Gardens, and the buzzing Osu nightlife scene. Whether you are on a business layover or taking a short break, Accra will captivate you with its warmth, colour and Akwaaba (welcome) spirit.

Friday – Arrival & Jamestown

Afternoon

Arrive at Kotoka International Airport. Uber/Bolt to Osu or Labone (GH₵40-80). Visit Jamestown — Accra's oldest neighbourhood with the lighthouse (GH₵10 to climb for 360-degree views), Ussher Fort, and the working fishing harbour where dozens of colourful painted boats land the day's catch. The energy here is raw and authentic.

Evening

Walk along Oxford Street in Osu for dinner. Try Buka for Ghanaian banku and grilled tilapia (GH₵60-100) or Santoku for pan-Asian fusion. Drinks at Republic Bar & Grill for live music or +233 Jazz Bar on Cantonments Road. Friday nights in Osu are buzzing — bars stay open late and the street food vendors are out in force.

Saturday – Day Trip & Culture

Option A: Cape Coast (full day)

Drive or take an STC bus to Cape Coast (3-4 hours, GH₵80-120). Tour Cape Coast Castle (GH₵80) — the UNESCO slave fort that will move you deeply. Continue to Elmina Castle (GH₵80, 15 minutes away) and try the Kakum canopy walkway (GH₵90) if time permits. Return to Accra by evening. This is an intense but rewarding day trip.

Option B: Aburi & Hills (half day)

For a more relaxed Saturday, drive 45 minutes to the Aburi Botanical Gardens (GH₵20) — stunning hillside gardens established in 1890 with giant trees, panoramic views of the Accra plains, and cool mountain air. Browse the Aburi craft market for beads and woodcarvings. Return to Accra for afternoon at Labadi Beach (GH₵10 entry) with live drumming, beach bars and reggae music.

Evening

Saturday night in Accra is legendary. Dinner at Azmera in East Legon for Ethiopian/Eritrean or Chez Clarisse in Osu for Ivorian food. Then hit Firefly Lounge in Osu, Carbon nightclub in Airport Residential, or Bloom Bar on Oxford Street for the full Accra party experience. The city dances until dawn.

Sunday – Culture, Brunch & Departure

Morning

Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (GH₵20) — the mausoleum of Ghana's founding father in beautiful gardens. Walk to Makola Market nearby for the full sensory experience of Accra's commercial heart — fabrics, spices, beads and controlled chaos. Then the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre (GH₵25) in Cantonments, the final home of the African-American civil rights leader.

Afternoon

Sunday brunch at The Breakfast Club in Labone or Cafe Kwae in East Legon. Final shopping at the Artists Alliance Gallery in Labadi for contemporary art, or the Accra Arts Centre for souvenirs. Transfer to Kotoka Airport for departure — the airport is conveniently close to most hotel areas (20-30 minutes).
