Ghana Passport Services in the United States

Everything Ghanaians living in the United States need to know about renewing a biometric passport, applying for a first or child passport, and replacing a lost passport through the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC.

Where Applications Are Handled

All Ghana passport applications in the United States go through the consular section of the Embassy of Ghana at 3512 International Drive NW, Washington, DC 20008. The embassy’s consular jurisdiction covers all fifty states, the District of Columbia and US territories, which means an applicant in Los Angeles deals with the same office as one in Baltimore. Because Ghana’s biometric passports require fingerprints and a photograph captured in person, most applicants must appear at the embassy at least once — so plan the trip before you book anything else.

For families in diaspora hubs far from the East Coast, it is worth checking whether a mobile consular outreach is scheduled. The embassy has periodically sent biometric-capture teams to cities with large Ghanaian communities such as Columbus, Chicago, Houston and Atlanta. Dates are announced on the embassy website and through Ghanaian community associations and churches; schedules vary from year to year, so confirm with the mission rather than relying on a previous year’s calendar.

Renewing a Ghana Passport in the US

Renewal is the most common request at the Washington mission. The general sequence is:

1. Complete the application — start online through the official passport application system where available, or obtain the form from the embassy. Print and sign any confirmation pages.
2. Book an appointment with the consular section for biometric capture. Walk-ins are not guaranteed to be seen, and travelling across the country without an appointment is a risk not worth taking.
3. Attend in person with your current or expired passport, your Ghana Card (now required for passport applications — see below), passport photographs on a white background, proof of your US address, and the fee.
4. Wait for printing in Accra. Completed applications are forwarded to the Passport Application Centre in Ghana. Standard processing typically takes 6-8 weeks; expedited handling, where offered, may shorten this to around 3-4 weeks.

On fees: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs benchmark for applications lodged abroad is approximately $50 USD for a standard 32-page passport and $75 USD for a 48-page passport. Fees vary by mission and are revised periodically — confirm the current amount and accepted payment method (usually money order, not cash or personal cheque) with the Washington embassy before your appointment.

The Ghana Card Requirement

Ghana has linked passport issuance to the national identity system, so a Ghana Card from the National Identification Authority (NIA) is now expected as part of a passport application. Ghanaians in the United States who have never enrolled can register at the embassy — enrolment captures the same biometrics as a passport application, so many applicants handle both in a single Washington trip. Bring your existing Ghana passport or birth certificate and proof of residence. If you are unsure whether your situation requires the card first, ask the consular section when booking; requirements have been phased in and exemptions occasionally apply.

First Passports and Child Passports

Children born in the United States to at least one Ghanaian parent are Ghanaian citizens by descent and can be issued a Ghana passport. In practice the embassy will want to see the child’s US birth certificate, both parents’ passports (Ghanaian and, where relevant, American), the parents’ marriage certificate if applicable, and passport photos of the child. Both parents are generally expected to consent to a minor’s passport; if one parent cannot attend, ask the embassy what consent documentation it will accept.

Adults applying for a first Ghana passport from the US — for example, US-born children of Ghanaian parents who never held one — should expect closer scrutiny of citizenship evidence: a Ghanaian birth certificate or the parents’ documents proving their citizenship at the time of birth.

Lost or Stolen Passports

If your Ghana passport is lost or stolen anywhere in the United States, report it to your local police department first and obtain a written police report — use the non-emergency line of your city or county police rather than 911 unless a crime is in progress. Then contact the embassy on +1 202 686 4520. A replacement passport follows the normal application route, but if you have urgent travel to Ghana, the embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Certificate, typically within 24-48 hours, on presentation of the police report, two photographs, evidence of identity and the applicable fee.

Practical Tips for US-Based Applicants

• Apply at least three months before travel. With printing done in Accra and high demand at the Washington mission, 6-8 weeks is the norm, not the worst case.
• Photocopy everything — the data page of your old passport, your Ghana Card, and your green card or US visa page. Keep a set at home.
• Check photo specifications. US passport-photo booths default to American sizing; confirm the embassy’s required dimensions and white background before printing.
• Do not book flights against an expired passport. Airlines flying to Accra will refuse boarding without a valid passport or Emergency Travel Certificate.
• Track your renewal window. Many US immigration processes (visa renewals, adjustment of status) require a passport valid for six months or more — renew the Ghanaian passport early to avoid knock-on problems with USCIS paperwork.
