Ghana Passport Services in Canada

Whether you live in Toronto, Vancouver or a small town in Saskatchewan, every Ghana passport application in Canada runs through the High Commission in Ottawa. This guide explains how the process actually works — including the parts you can do from home and the one step that requires you to appear in person.

How the Process Works

Ghana issues biometric passports, which means fingerprints and a photograph must be captured in person. For applicants in Canada the sequence is:

1. Complete the online application. Start on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs passport portal, fill in your details and pay the application fee. Print the summary and barcode pages.
2. Book a biometric appointment in Ottawa. Contact the High Commission by email (ottawaconsular@ghanahighcommission.ca) or through its website to arrange a date. Walk-in biometric capture is generally not offered, so do not travel without a confirmed slot.
3. Attend with your documents. Bring your current or expired passport, your Ghana Card, passport photographs on a white background, proof of your Canadian address (a utility bill, driver’s licence or PR card works), and your printed application.
4. Wait for printing in Accra. Applications are forwarded to the Passport Application Centre in Accra. Standard processing takes 6–8 weeks; ask the mission about return of the finished passport by tracked Canada Post or courier envelope so you do not need a second trip.

The distance problem is real: Ottawa is a 4–5 hour drive from Toronto, about 2 hours from Montreal, and a full day of flying from Vancouver or Calgary. The High Commission periodically runs mobile consular outreach in cities with large Ghanaian communities — if you are in the GTA, Alberta or British Columbia, ask whether an outreach visit is planned before booking travel to Ottawa.

Fees and Processing Times

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets standard overseas fees at approximately $50 USD for a 32-page passport and $75 USD for a 48-page passport, with express options at higher cost. Fees at individual missions vary and are usually payable in a prescribed format rather than cash or personal cheque — confirm the current Canadian-dollar amount and accepted payment method with the Ottawa mission before your appointment. Child passports cost the same as adult passports.

The Ghana Card Requirement

The Ghana Card, issued by the National Identification Authority, is now required for passport applications. Child Passports for Children Born in Canada

A child born in Canada to at least one Ghanaian parent is a Ghanaian citizen by descent and is also a Canadian citizen by birth — both countries permit this dual status. Before applying for the child’s first Ghana passport, register the birth with the High Commission. You will need the provincial long-form birth certificate showing the parents’ names (order this from your provincial registry, e.g. ServiceOntario or the Directeur de l’état civil in Quebec — the short wallet-sized certificate is not sufficient because it does not name the parents), both parents’ passports, and the parents’ marriage certificate if applicable. Children must generally appear in person for biometric capture; confirm age thresholds with the mission.

Lost or Stolen Passports in Canada

Report the loss to your local police service first (or the RCMP in areas it serves) and obtain a police report or file number — the High Commission will ask for it. If you need to travel to Ghana urgently, the mission can issue an Emergency Travel Certificate within 24–48 hours; a replacement passport follows the normal 6–8 week route. Practical Tips from Applicants in Canada

• Photograph or scan every page of your old passport before submitting it — you may need visa or entry-stamp details later.
• Apply at least three months before any planned travel; winter storms, postal delays and Accra printing backlogs stack up.
• If mailing anything to the mission, use Canada Post Xpresspost or a courier with tracking, and include a prepaid tracked return envelope.
• Your Canadian PR card or citizenship is unaffected by renewing a Ghanaian passport — but check that the name on all documents matches exactly, or bring a change-of-name certificate.

Name Changes and Document Mismatches

Mismatched names are the most common reason applications stall. Marriage in Canada, anglicised spellings adopted at immigration, and the day-name conventions common in Ghanaian families (Kwame, Akosua and the rest sometimes appearing on one document but not another) all create discrepancies between your Ghanaian birth certificate, your old passport and your Canadian ID. If you married in Canada and took a new surname, bring the provincial marriage certificate; if a court or provincial registry changed your name, bring the change-of-name certificate. Where the discrepancy is older — say your birth certificate says Yaw Owusu but every document since says Y. B. Owusu-Ansah — a statutory declaration sworn before a notary or commissioner for oaths in your province, explaining that both names refer to you, usually resolves it. Ask the consular section in advance which supporting evidence they want for your specific case rather than discovering the gap at the counter after a long drive to Ottawa.
