Getting a Ghana Visa from Canada

Canadian passport holders need a visa to enter Ghana. There are two routes from Canada: the online e-Visa portal for eligible applicants, and a traditional sticker visa through the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa. This guide covers both, plus the health rules that catch first-time travellers out at Kotoka International Airport.

Who Needs a Visa — and Who Does Not

Citizens of Canada, like most non-African nationals, must obtain a visa before travelling to Ghana. The main exceptions worth knowing about in a Canadian context:

• ECOWAS citizens living in Canada (Nigerians, Senegalese, Ivorians and nationals of the other West African member states) do not need a visa for Ghana under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement — they travel on their ECOWAS-country passport.
• Ghanaian dual citizens should simply travel on their Ghana passport or carry their dual citizenship card; see our citizenship guide.
• People of African descent — a significant community in Toronto, Montreal and Halifax — may be interested in Ghana’s Right of Abode under the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), which grants indefinite residence rights rather than a visa. It is processed through the Ghana Immigration Service; the High Commission can advise on starting the application.

Option 1: The Ghana e-Visa

Ghana’s e-Visa portal at evisa.ghana.gov.gh lets citizens of eligible countries apply online, pay electronically and receive an approval to present on arrival. For applicants in Canada this is usually the fastest route when it is available for your nationality and purpose of travel, and it eliminates mailing your passport across the country. Check the portal first: if your nationality or visa category is not supported, you fall back to the Ottawa application described below.

Option 2: Applying Through the High Commission in Ottawa

Traditional visa applications for Canada residents are handled by the Ghana High Commission at 1 Clemow Avenue, Ottawa. Because most applicants do not live within driving distance of Ottawa, postal applications with a prepaid tracked return envelope are the norm for visas — but procedures, forms and fees change, so confirm the current process, fee and payment method with the mission before sending your passport. A typical application package includes:

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond travel, with blank pages
• Completed application form and passport photographs
• Proof of travel (itinerary or booking) and accommodation or a host invitation letter from Ghana
• For business visas: a letter from your Canadian employer or company and an invitation from the Ghanaian counterpart
• The visa fee in the format the mission specifies (typically not cash or personal cheque by mail)

Single-entry tourist visas allow stays of up to 60 days; multiple-entry visas suit frequent business travellers on routes like the KLM and Brussels Airlines connections from Toronto and Montreal to Accra. Transit visas cover stops of up to 48 hours.

Yellow Fever: The Rule That Stops Travellers at the Airport

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry to Ghana, and airlines flying from Canada will check for it. The vaccine is not routine in Canada, so you must visit a designated yellow fever vaccination centre — Canada administers these through travel health clinics approved by the Public Health Agency of Canada; most major cities have several. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure (the certificate only becomes valid then), and keep the yellow ICVP card with your passport. Travel clinics will also discuss malaria prophylaxis, which is strongly recommended for Ghana.

Timing Your Application from Canada

Plan backwards from your departure date. Allow time for the vaccination appointment, for Canada Post transit in both directions if applying by mail (a week each way is realistic outside Ontario and Quebec), and for the mission’s own processing. December travel is the crunch period — the Christmas “Detty December” season sees heavy demand from the Toronto and Montreal diaspora, and both visa processing and Accra-bound flights fill up. Applying six to eight weeks ahead is a safe rule of thumb; confirm current processing times with the mission rather than relying on third-party estimates.

Visas for Ghanaians Inviting Family to Canada

A frequent point of confusion: the Ghana High Commission issues visas to Ghana, not to Canada. If you are a Ghanaian in Canada inviting relatives to visit you, they need a Canadian visitor visa from IRCC, applied for in Ghana through the Canadian visa office serving Accra. The Ottawa mission cannot assist with Canadian immigration matters.

Common Reasons Applications from Canada Are Delayed

Consular staff see the same avoidable problems repeatedly. Passports arrive with less than six months’ validity, forcing applicants to renew their Canadian passport first and restart the clock. Payment is sent in the wrong format — a personal cheque instead of the instrument the mission specifies — and the package sits until it is corrected. Invitation letters from Ghana omit the host’s address or Ghana Card details. And applicants outside Ontario forget that a package mailed from Vancouver or Halifax can spend a week in transit each way before processing even begins. Double-check the mission’s current checklist on ottawa.mfa.gov.gh the week you apply, not the week you first planned the trip: requirements do change, and third-party sites (including this one) can lag behind the mission’s own instructions.
