Ghana Passport Services in Italy

Everything Ghanaians living in Italy need to know about renewing or applying for a biometric passport through the Embassy of Ghana in Rome — from booking your visit to what happens while your application is printed in Accra.

The Rome embassy at Via Ostriana 4 is the only Ghanaian mission in Italy, so all passport applications lodged in the country pass through it. That is a real consideration for the tens of thousands of Ghanaians based in Brescia, Modena, Vicenza, Verona and the wider north: biometric capture (fingerprints and photograph) must be done in person, which for most applicants means a trip to Rome. The good news is that the process itself is well established, and if you arrive with a complete file you should only need one visit before collection.

Who Needs to Apply Through Rome

You should use the Rome embassy if you are a Ghanaian citizen resident in Italy and you need to:

• Renew an expiring or expired biometric passport — the most common request;
• Replace a lost, stolen or damaged passport — see also the emergency services guide if you need to travel urgently;
• Apply for a first passport for a child born in Italy — after registering the birth with the embassy (covered in the citizenship guide);
• Apply for a first adult passport — for example if you previously travelled on other documents.

If you are only passing through Italy and your passport is valid, no action is needed. If you are resident in a neighbouring country, apply through the Ghanaian mission accredited to that country rather than Rome.

Step by Step: Renewing a Ghana Passport from Italy

1. Prepare your documents. You will need your current or expired Ghana passport, passport photographs with a white background, evidence of your Ghanaian citizenship (the old passport usually suffices; a birth certificate helps for first-time applicants), and proof that you live in Italy. For proof of residence, Italian documents such as your permesso di soggiorno (residence permit), carta d'identità, or a certificato di residenza from your comune are the natural choices — confirm with the embassy which it currently accepts.
2. Contact the embassy to arrange your visit. Appointments are generally required for biometric capture. Call +39 06 8621 7191 or email info@ghanaembassy.it, or check rome.mfa.gov.gh for the current booking procedure. Ask at the same time about the current fee and accepted payment method so you arrive prepared.
3. Attend in person in Rome. The embassy is in the Trieste quarter, reachable via the Libia stop on Metro B1. Bring originals and photocopies of everything. Your fingerprints and photograph are captured on site, and your application is checked before submission.
4. Wait while the passport is printed in Accra. Ghana passports are not printed at embassies. Applications from Rome are forwarded to the Passport Application Centre in Accra, personalised there, and returned to the embassy. Standard processing typically takes 6-8 weeks end to end.
5. Collect your new passport. The embassy will advise how collection works — in person or, for some applicants, by registered post within Italy. Confirm the arrangement when you apply, particularly if you live in the north and want to avoid a second trip.

Fees and Processing Times

Passport fees for applications abroad follow the Ministry of Foreign Affairs schedule: approximately $50 USD for the standard 32-page booklet and $75 USD for the 48-page booklet. Fees at individual missions vary with local currency and payment arrangements — confirm the current amount in euros with the Rome embassy before your appointment. Express processing, where offered, costs more and can shorten the wait to roughly 3-4 weeks, but availability changes; ask when booking.

Child passports cost the same as adult passports. Emergency Travel Certificates — one-way documents for urgent travel back to Ghana — are a separate, cheaper service (roughly $30-50 USD) covered in the emergency guide.

The single most common mistake applicants in Italy make is booking flights before the passport arrives. Because printing happens in Accra, no embassy can promise a faster turnaround than the courier and printing cycle allows. If you are planning summer travel to Ghana — peak season for the diaspora — start the renewal in early spring.

The Ghana Card and Your Passport

Ghana has been progressively linking passport issuance to the Ghana Card, the national ID issued by the National Identification Authority. Diaspora registration is available at participating missions. First Passports for Children Born in Italy

Italy does not grant citizenship automatically to children born on Italian soil, so a child born in Italy to Ghanaian parents is a Ghanaian citizen by descent and will normally travel on a Ghana passport. Before the passport application, register the birth with the embassy. You will need the Italian birth certificate — an estratto dell'atto di nascita issued by the comune where the child was born (the international/multilingual format is useful) — along with both parents' passports and, if applicable, a marriage certificate. Once the consular birth registration is done, the child's passport application follows the standard route, with both parents normally expected to consent.

Travelling to Rome for Your Appointment

From Milan, the Frecciarossa reaches Roma Termini in about three hours; from Bologna it is around two, and from Naples just over an hour. Many applicants from the north do the round trip in a day. Aim for a morning slot — and confirm current consular opening hours with the embassy — and double-check your document set the night before. An incomplete file is the main reason people end up making the journey twice.
