Birth Registration for Ghanaians Abroad

If your child was born outside Ghana and one or both parents are Ghanaian citizens, you can register the birth at your nearest Ghana embassy or high commission.

Why Register?

Registering your child's birth at a Ghana embassy is important for:

  • Proof of Ghanaian citizenship - Children born to Ghanaian parents are citizens by birth under the 1992 Constitution
  • Ghana passport - A consular birth certificate is required to apply for a Ghana passport for the child
  • Ghana Card - Required for future Ghana Card registration
  • Legal recognition - Establishes the child's identity in Ghanaian records
  • Inheritance rights - Legal standing under Ghanaian law

Required Documents

  • Child's foreign birth certificate (original and certified copy)
  • Both parents' Ghana passports (current or expired)
  • Parents' marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Completed birth registration form (available at the embassy)
  • Four passport photographs of the child
  • Proof of residence in the host country
  • If only one parent is Ghanaian: the Ghanaian parent's passport plus a statutory declaration

Process

  1. Gather documents and contact the embassy for an appointment.
  2. Visit the embassy with the child and all required documents.
  3. Complete the registration form and pay the fee.
  4. The embassy issues a consular birth certificate and forwards the registration to the Births and Deaths Registry in Ghana.
  5. Apply for a Ghana passport for the child using the consular birth certificate.

Fees & Processing

  • Registration fee: $20-40 USD (varies by embassy)
  • Consular birth certificate: Typically issued within 5-10 working days
  • Late registration: Available with no penalty, though early registration is recommended
There is no time limit for birth registration. However, registering as early as possible avoids complications with passport applications and other services.
