Birth Registration for Ghanaians Abroad

If your child was born outside Ghana and one or both parents are Ghanaian citizens, you can register the birth at your nearest Ghana embassy or high commission. This establishes the child's Ghanaian citizenship and entitles them to a Ghana passport.

Constitutional Right: Under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, a person born outside Ghana is a citizen by birth if either parent or grandparent is a Ghanaian citizen. Registration at the embassy formalises this right.

Why Register?

For the Child

  • Proof of Ghanaian citizenship — formal documentation of citizenship by birth
  • Ghana passport — a consular birth certificate is required for the child's first passport
  • Ghana Card (NIA) — required for future Ghana Card registration
  • Dual citizenship — under the Citizenship Act 2002, the child can hold both Ghanaian and foreign citizenship
  • Inheritance rights — legal standing under Ghanaian law

For the Parents

  • Official record — the birth is recorded with the Births and Deaths Registry in Ghana
  • Immigration support — may strengthen family-based immigration applications
  • Passport application — can apply for the child's passport at the same visit
  • Legal documentation — formal proof of parentage under Ghanaian law

Important Notes

  • No time limit — there is no deadline for registering a birth. Adults born abroad to Ghanaian parents who were never registered can still apply
  • No penalty for late registration — Ghana does not charge a late registration fee
  • Single parent — if only one parent is Ghanaian, that parent alone can register the birth. A statutory declaration may be required
  • Dual citizenship — under the Citizenship Act 2002, Ghanaian citizens can hold dual citizenship. The child can be both Ghanaian and a citizen of the country of birth
  • Ghana Card — after registration, the child may be eligible for Ghana Card (NIA) registration at embassies offering the service
  • Death registration — Ghana embassies also handle death registration for Ghanaian citizens who pass away abroad, following a similar process

Pro Tip

After registering the birth, apply for the child's Ghana passport at the same visit to save a second trip.

Also ask about Ghana Card (NIA) registration if your embassy offers the service.
