What is the Ghana E-Passport?

The Ghana e-passport is a chip-embedded travel document that stores the holder biometric data electronically. It was officially rolled out on 28 April 2025 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

How to Apply for the E-Passport

Application Process

  1. Get a Ghana Card: The Ghana Card (GhanaCard) is mandatory before you can apply for a passport. If abroad, register at your nearest embassy.
  2. Apply Online: Visit passport.mfa.gov.gh to create an account and complete your application.
  3. Upload Documents: Upload a passport photo (white background, JPEG/PDF), enter your Ghana Card number, and personal details.
  4. Pay Fee: Pay online or select pay-at-counter. Standard 32-page costs GHS 350 domestically.
  5. Book Appointment: Schedule biometric capture at your nearest passport centre or embassy.
  6. Attend Appointment: Bring your printed application, old passport (if renewing), photographs, and payment receipt.
  7. Biometric Capture: Your fingerprints and digital photograph will be taken.
  8. Collection: Collect your passport when notified (15 working days standard, or opt for courier delivery).

Transition from Old Passport

  • Old non-chip Ghanaian passports remain valid until their expiry date
  • You do NOT need to replace your current passport before it expires
  • All new applications and renewals will automatically receive the e-passport
  • The transition is seamless; no additional forms or fees apply specifically for the e-passport upgrade
  • Premium passport centres in Ghana have been shut down; all applications now go through the standard centralised system
