ECOWAS Free Movement

Citizens of all 15 ECOWAS member states enjoy visa-free entry to Ghana under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons. These countries include:

  • Liberia
  • Mali
  • Burkina Faso

Requirements: Valid passport or ECOWAS Travel Certificate. Stay of up to 90 days without a visa. Extensions available through Ghana Immigration Service.

Ghana e-Visa Portal

Ghana launched its online e-Visa system to streamline visa applications for eligible nationalities. The portal allows travellers to apply, pay, and receive their visa electronically.

Visa-Free Countries

Besides ECOWAS nationals, citizens of the following countries can visit Ghana without a visa or obtain one on arrival:

  • Singapore - Visa-free for up to 90 days
  • Several Caribbean nations - Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago (bilateral agreements)
  • African Union member states - Ghana has been progressively opening visa-on-arrival for AU passport holders

Citizens of most other countries, including the UK, USA, EU, Australia, and India, require a visa obtained in advance from a Ghana embassy or through the e-Visa portal.

General Visa Requirements

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity remaining)
  • Completed visa application form
  • Two recent passport photographs (white background)
  • Proof of accommodation in Ghana
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (mandatory)
  • Invitation letter (for business visa) or enrolment letter (for student visa)
  • Visa fee payment

Right of Abode - Year of Return & Beyond the Return

Ghana's Right of Abode programme, championed through the Year of Return (2019) and the Beyond the Return initiative, allows persons of African descent to live and work in Ghana indefinitely.

  • 10-year renewable residency permit
  • Eligibility: Persons of African descent from the diaspora
  • Documentation: Birth certificate, passport, proof of African heritage
  • Application through Ghana Immigration Service or selected embassies
  • Cost: Approximately $150 USD

Since the Year of Return, thousands of African Americans, Caribbean nationals, and other diaspora members have relocated to Ghana, particularly to Accra and Cape Coast.

Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for all travellers entering Ghana. You must present your International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) at immigration.
