Document Legalization & Authentication
How to authenticate Ghanaian documents for use abroad, or foreign documents for use in Ghana, through Ghana embassies and high commissions. This guide covers the full process, fees, and country-specific requirements for 2026.
What is Document Legalization?
Document legalization (also called authentication or attestation) is the process of verifying the authenticity of a document so it can be recognised in another country. Ghana embassies can authenticate documents issued in Ghana for use abroad, or verify foreign documents for use in Ghana.
This service is commonly needed for:
- Immigration applications (spousal visas, family reunification)
- Employment abroad (verifying educational qualifications)
- Business transactions (company registration, powers of attorney)
- Legal proceedings in foreign courts
- Property transactions in Ghana from abroad

Step-by-Step Process
- Prepare your documents — Gather the original documents to be authenticated, plus certified copies. If documents are not in English, obtain a certified translation.

- Contact the embassy — Call or email your nearest Ghana embassy to confirm requirements, fees, and whether an appointment is needed.
- Submit at the embassy — Present original documents, copies, photo ID (Ghana passport or Ghana Card), and pay the authentication fee.
- Processing — Standard processing takes 3-5 working days. Some documents may need to be sent to Accra for verification, which can take 2-4 weeks.
- Collection — Collect authenticated documents from the embassy or arrange courier delivery (additional fee).
