Everything Ghanaians in South Africa need to know about renewing or applying for a biometric passport through the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria — including what to prepare before you travel, realistic timelines, and what to do if your passport goes missing.

Where Applications Happen

All Ghana passport applications in South Africa are processed through the High Commission at 1038 Arcadia Street, Hatfield, Pretoria. Because Ghana has no consulate in Cape Town, Durban, or Johannesburg, biometric capture — fingerprints and photograph — can only be done in Pretoria. If you live in the Western Cape or KwaZulu-Natal, build the trip into your planning: an incomplete file means a second 1,200–1,400 km round trip, so it pays to confirm your checklist with the mission by phone (+27 12 342 5847) or email (pretoria@mfa.gov.gh) before setting out.

Your completed application is not printed in South Africa. Like all missions abroad, Pretoria forwards applications to the Passport Application Centre in Accra, which is why standard processing takes around 6–8 weeks. Apply well before any planned travel, and never book non-refundable tickets against an expected passport delivery date.

Renewing a Ghana Passport

Renewal is the most common request the mission handles. The broad sequence looks like this:

1. Start online where applicable. Ghana’s passport application portal handles pre-enrolment for many missions. Check pretoria.mfa.gov.gh for the current application route for South Africa before filling anything in — procedures are updated periodically.
2. Book an appointment with the High Commission for biometric capture. Walk-ins are not guaranteed to be seen.
3. Attend in person with your documents (below) and the fee.
4. Wait for collection notice. The mission will advise how collection or courier return works when you apply.

Fees and Processing Times

Under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ standard schedule for missions abroad, a 32-page biometric passport costs approximately $50 USD and a 48-page passport approximately $75 USD, with express options at higher cost where offered. Standard processing is 6–8 weeks; express processing, where available, may shorten this to 3–4 weeks.

First Passports for Children Born in South Africa

A child born in South Africa to at least one Ghanaian parent is a Ghanaian citizen by descent. Before a first passport can be issued, the birth should be registered with the High Commission. For South African-born children, request an unabridged birth certificate (the version showing both parents’ details) from the Department of Home Affairs — the abridged certificate is generally not sufficient for consular purposes. Bring the child, both parents’ passports, the parents’ marriage certificate if applicable, and passport photographs of the child. Child passports cost the same as adult passports under the standard schedule.

Lost or Stolen Passports in South Africa

Passport theft is unfortunately common in Johannesburg and other metros. Act in this order:

1. Report to SAPS. Go to any South African Police Service station and open a case. Note the CAS number (case reference) — the High Commission and airlines will ask for it, and you may need it for insurance.
2. Contact the High Commission on +27 12 342 5847 or pretoria@mfa.gov.gh. Bring or send the police report, two passport photographs, and any proof of identity you still hold (a photocopy of the lost passport, Ghana Card, or driving licence).
3. Replacement or emergency travel. A full replacement passport follows the normal 6–8 week route. If you must travel to Ghana urgently, the mission can issue an Emergency Travel Certificate, typically within 24–48 hours, at a cost of roughly $30–50 USD.

Keep certified copies of your passport bio-data page and South African permit separately from the originals — any SAPS station or commissioner of oaths can certify copies free of charge, and it dramatically simplifies replacement.

Why Your Passport Expiry Date Matters More in South Africa

For Ghanaians on South African visas or permits, the passport and the permit are tightly linked: the Department of Home Affairs generally requires a passport valid well beyond the permit period when you renew a work, study, or relatives visa, and VFS submission centres will not accept applications against an expiring passport. Given the 6–8 week consular processing time via Accra, the safe habit is to start your Ghana passport renewal at least six months before any South African permit renewal falls due. Renewing late can leave you unable to lodge your Home Affairs application on time — a far more expensive problem than the passport fee itself. The same logic applies to opening bank accounts, SARS registrations, and vehicle licensing, all of which lean on a valid passport for foreign nationals. • Appointments are usually mid-morning; confirm the mission’s current public hours before travelling. Aim to arrive early.

• Bring photocopies of everything — the mission may retain copies, and copy shops near the precinct are not guaranteed.
