Ghana Visa Services in South Africa

Planning a trip from South Africa to Ghana? For many travellers the news is excellent: since 1 November 2023, South African ordinary passport holders no longer need a visa for short visits. This guide covers the waiver, who still needs a visa, and how to apply through the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria or the e-Visa portal.

The Ghana–South Africa Visa Waiver

Ghana and South Africa signed a reciprocal visa waiver agreement that took effect on 1 November 2023. Holders of ordinary South African passports may enter Ghana without a visa for tourism or business, for a cumulative total of 90 days per calendar year. The days can be used in a single stay or spread across several trips; once the 90 days are exhausted, a visa is required for further travel that year. The waiver does not confer the right to work in Ghana — employment still requires a work permit through the Ghana Immigration Service.

The agreement is reciprocal, so Ghanaian ordinary passport holders enjoy the same 90-day arrangement when visiting South Africa. If your travel plans involve longer stays, study, or employment, contact the High Commission before travelling, and confirm current entry conditions close to your departure date as bilateral arrangements can be amended.

Who Still Needs a Visa for Ghana?

• Non-South African nationals living in South Africa whose countries have no waiver with Ghana — for example Zimbabwean, Indian, Chinese, or European passport holders resident in SA — unless they qualify under another arrangement.
• South Africans who have used up their 90 days in the current calendar year.
• Anyone travelling for purposes beyond tourism or business, such as employment, study, or long-term residence.

Citizens of the 15 ECOWAS member states (Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and others) never need a visa for Ghana under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement, wherever they live. And persons of African descent may be interested in Ghana’s Right of Abode under the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), a renewable long-term residence status processed through the Ghana Immigration Service.

How to Apply in South Africa

There are two routes for applicants in South Africa:

1. The e-Visa portal

Ghana’s e-Visa system at evisa.ghana.gov.gh accepts online applications from citizens of eligible countries. You upload your documents, pay online, and receive the visa electronically — no trip to Pretoria required. Check the portal to confirm your nationality is eligible before starting.

2. The High Commission in Pretoria

Applicants who prefer, or must use, the paper route apply through the Ghana High Commission at 1038 Arcadia Street, Hatfield, Pretoria (phone +27 12 342 5847, email pretoria@mfa.gov.gh). The mission serves the whole of South Africa, so applicants in Cape Town or Durban typically apply by courier where the mission permits, or travel to Pretoria — confirm the current submission procedure with the mission first.

Typical requirements

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond travel, with blank pages
• Completed application form
• Passport photographs
• Proof of onward or return travel and accommodation in Ghana
• Invitation letter for business visas
• Yellow Fever vaccination certificate — mandatory for all travellers to Ghana and checked at Kotoka International Airport, waiver or no waiver
• Proof of legal residence in South Africa for third-country nationals

Fees vary by nationality, visa type, and entry category. The High Commission sets and publishes its own fee schedule — confirm the current amount and payment method with the mission or on pretoria.mfa.gov.gh before applying. Allow at least two weeks for processing at busy periods, and longer around December when Ghana-bound travel peaks.

Extending a Stay Once You Are in Ghana

Whether you entered visa-free under the waiver or on a visa, extensions are handled inside Ghana by the Ghana Immigration Service, not by the High Commission in Pretoria. Visitors who realise they need longer — a business negotiation that runs over, family matters, an extended stay around the December festive season — should apply to GIS in Accra before their permitted stay expires. Overstaying attracts penalties charged per day and can complicate future entries, which is a poor trade against a straightforward extension. South Africans using waiver days should also keep their own arithmetic: the 90 days are cumulative across the calendar year, and immigration officers at Kotoka can see your entry history. If your plans are drifting toward employment or long-term residence, start the work or residence permit conversation with GIS early — the visa or waiver only covers your entry, never your right to work.

Before You Fly

Direct flights operate between Johannesburg and Accra. Double-check three things before departure: your Yellow Fever card, your visa or waiver eligibility for the current calendar year, and the validity of your South African re-entry documentation if you are a foreign resident of South Africa. Travellers have been denied boarding at O.R. Tambo for a missing Yellow Fever certificate more often than for any visa problem.
