What to do — and who to call — when things go wrong in Qatar: medical emergencies, lost passports, arrests, deaths, labour disputes and urgent travel back to Ghana.

Lost or Stolen Passport — Urgent Travel

Report the loss at a Qatari police station (or via the Ministry of Interior’s online channels) and get the police report first — nothing moves without it. Then contact the embassy in West Bay. If you need to travel to Ghana urgently, the embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) within 24–48 hours: bring the police report, two passport photographs, proof of identity (a passport photocopy, Ghana Card or driver’s licence) and the fee. Arrest or Detention

If you are arrested in Qatar, you have the right to ask that the Embassy of Ghana be informed. Ask the police explicitly to notify the embassy, and if you get a phone call, call the mission or have a friend do so with your full name, passport or QID number, and where you are held. The embassy can visit or contact detainees, provide lists of local lawyers, notify family in Ghana with your consent, and monitor that due process is followed. It cannot get you released, pay legal fees or interfere in Qatari court proceedings. Be aware that Qatari law differs sharply from Ghanaian law in areas like alcohol, drugs (zero tolerance, severe penalties), cheques that bounce, debt, and public conduct — and that exit from Qatar can be blocked while criminal or debt cases are open.

Labour Disputes and Welfare Cases

A significant share of the embassy’s welfare work in Qatar involves employment problems: unpaid wages, confiscated passports (illegal under Qatari law — employers may not hold your passport without consent), contract substitution, or difficult conditions in domestic work. Steps that help:

• Keep your own copies of your contract, QID, and wage records (Qatar’s Wage Protection System means salaries should arrive by bank transfer — keep statements);
• Complaints about employers can be filed with Qatar’s Ministry of Labour, including through its online complaint channels and the Amerni app where available;
• Contact the embassy early — consular staff can advise, engage with the sponsor or the authorities, and in serious welfare cases help arrange repatriation;
• Domestic workers in distress can also approach Qatari authorities directly — call 999 in any situation of immediate danger.

Medical Emergencies and Hospitalisation

Call 999 for an ambulance. Qatar’s public emergency care through Hamad Medical Corporation is of a high standard, and emergency treatment is provided regardless of status, but ongoing care depends on your health card and insurance. If a Ghanaian is hospitalised and unable to communicate, family or colleagues should inform the embassy — consular staff can help contact relatives in Ghana and liaise with the hospital. Keep your health card current and make sure a workmate or friend knows how to reach your family. Summer deserves a specific mention: outdoor workers in Qatar face genuine heat-stress risk between June and September, when midday temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Qatar enforces a summer midday outdoor work ban — if your employer ignores it, that is a reportable labour violation as well as a health emergency waiting to happen.

Death of a Ghanaian in Qatar

When a Ghanaian national dies in Qatar, the embassy assists the family with the painful logistics: registering the death with the Qatari authorities, obtaining the death certificate and hospital documentation, and arranging either local burial or repatriation of remains to Ghana. Repatriation from Doha requires embalming certification, MOFA-attested documentation and airline cargo booking — employers or their insurance often bear the cost for workers who die in service, and community associations frequently rally to support families. Contact the embassy as soon as possible; do not sign undertakings on costs before understanding who is responsible for them.

Crisis Situations and Registration

In a wider crisis — regional tension, mass evacuation, natural events — the embassy coordinates with Ghana’s MFA in Accra and with Qatari authorities. Its ability to help depends on knowing you exist: email doha@mfa.gov.gh with your name, passport number, QID, phone number and address in Qatar to register your presence, and update it when you change jobs or move. Follow the embassy’s official channels for verified information rather than social media rumour.

Out of Hours and If You Cannot Reach the Embassy

The embassy works the Gulf week, Sunday to Thursday — confirm current opening hours with the mission. Ask the mission for its current after-hours emergency arrangement before you need it, and save the numbers in your phone.
