The Embassy of Ghana in West Bay, Doha handles visa applications for travel to Ghana from the State of Qatar. Doha’s position as a global aviation hub matters here: Qatar Airways flies directly between Hamad International Airport and Accra’s Kotoka International Airport, which has made Ghana an increasingly popular destination for Gulf-based tourists, investors and members of the African diaspora working in Qatar.

Who Needs a Visa for Ghana?

Most travellers applying from Qatar will need a visa before departure. The key exceptions and categories:

• ECOWAS citizens do not need a visa. Nationals of the 15 ECOWAS member states — including the large Nigerian, Senegalese and Ivorian communities working in Qatar — can enter Ghana visa-free under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement, using a valid national passport.
• Qatari nationals and most other residents of Qatar need a visa. Check the Ghana e-Visa portal to see whether your nationality is eligible to apply online; otherwise apply through the Doha embassy.
• Ghanaian citizens naturally need no visa — but if you hold only a foreign passport (for example, a Ghanaian-born naturalised citizen of another country without dual citizenship documents), you will need a visa like any other foreign national. • People of African descent interested in long-term relocation can explore Ghana’s Right of Abode under the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), a renewable long-term residence status processed through the Ghana Immigration Service.

Visa Types Available

Work and residence permits for Ghana are handled by the Ghana Immigration Service in Accra rather than granted outright by the embassy — the mission can advise on the process and authenticate supporting documents.

Applying Through the Doha Embassy

Contact the embassy on +974 4483 1551 or doha@mfa.gov.gh before attending — application days, submission windows and payment methods are set locally, and the mission works Sunday to Thursday — confirm current hours when you call. A typical application package includes:

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended arrival in Ghana, with at least one blank page;
• Completed application form and recent passport photographs;
• Proof of Qatar residence (QID) for expatriate applicants;
• Flight itinerary and hotel booking or a host invitation letter with the host’s address in Ghana;
• For business visas, a letter from your Qatari employer and an invitation from the Ghanaian counterpart company;
• The visa fee — fees vary by mission and visa type, so confirm the current amount with the Doha embassy when you enquire.

Allow at least one to two weeks for processing, and longer around Qatari and Ghanaian public holidays. Applying three to four weeks before travel is a safe rule of thumb.

Yellow Fever Certificate — Do Not Skip This

Ghana requires all arriving travellers to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (the international “yellow card”). Airlines flying the Doha–Accra route check for it at boarding, and it is inspected again at Kotoka International Airport. Yellow fever vaccination is available in Qatar through designated travel health clinics — ask your health centre or a private hospital travel clinic in Doha, and get vaccinated at least ten days before departure, which is when the certificate becomes valid. Hepatitis A, typhoid and malaria prophylaxis are also recommended for Ghana; Qatar-based clinics can advise.

Heritage Travel: Year of Return and Beyond

Doha’s workforce includes large communities from across Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, and interest in Ghana as a heritage destination has grown steadily since the Year of Return (2019) and the ongoing Beyond the Return initiative. If you are of African descent and considering more than a holiday — a longer stay, investment, or eventual relocation — a standard tourist visa is the usual starting point, and the Right of Abode or a residence permit through the Ghana Immigration Service can follow once you have visited. December in Accra (“Detty December”) is the peak season: flights from Doha fill up months ahead, and visa processing queues lengthen from October onwards, so apply early if you are planning an end-of-year trip.

Travelling to Ghana: Practical Notes from Qatar

• Direct flights from Doha to Accra take roughly eight hours. Ghana is three hours behind Qatar (GMT vs GMT+3).
• Expatriate residents of Qatar should check their Qatari re-entry position with their sponsor before extended stays in Ghana — long absences can affect residence permits.
• Carry printed copies of your visa approval and invitation documents; immigration officers at Kotoka may ask for them.
• Ghana’s currency is the cedi (GHS). Qatari riyals are not widely exchangeable in Accra, so carry US dollars or use cards and ATMs.
