Ghana Passport Services in Qatar

How to renew, replace or apply for a Ghana biometric passport while living in Qatar, through the Embassy of Ghana in West Bay, Doha — the only Ghanaian mission in the country.

For the tens of thousands of West African workers in Qatar, a valid passport is more than a travel document: your Qatar residence permit (QID), exit formalities and any change of employer all hinge on it. Qatari sponsors and government offices routinely refuse passports with less than six months’ validity, so Ghanaians in Doha should start the renewal process at least six months before expiry — earlier if you have travel or a contract renewal coming up, because printing happens in Accra, not Doha.

How Passport Applications Work in Doha

Ghana’s biometric passports are printed centrally at the Passport Application Centre in Accra. The Doha embassy’s role is to receive your application, capture your biometrics, and forward everything to Accra. In practice the process looks like this:

1. Contact the embassy first. Phone +974 4483 1551 or email doha@mfa.gov.gh to confirm current requirements, whether online pre-registration on the passport portal is required, and to arrange a date for biometric capture. The embassy works Sunday to Thursday, so plan around the Gulf working week and confirm current hours when you call.
2. Prepare your documents. Typically: your current or expired Ghana passport, Ghana Card or birth certificate, completed application form, passport photographs on a white background, proof of residence in Qatar (QID copy is usually the simplest), and the fee.
3. Attend in person. Biometric capture (fingerprints and photograph) must be done at the embassy in West Bay — it cannot be done by post or through a third party, even if an agent helped you fill the forms.
4. Wait for printing in Accra. Standard processing takes around 6–8 weeks, since the application travels to Accra and the finished passport travels back by diplomatic channels. Ask the embassy whether express handling is available for your case.
5. Collect your new passport. The embassy will contact you when it arrives. Bring your old passport and QID for identification at collection.

Fees

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets canonical passport fees of approximately $50 USD for a standard 32-page passport and $75 USD for a 48-page passport for applications lodged abroad. Missions may collect the equivalent in local currency, and amounts and payment methods (cash, bank transfer, card) differ between posts — fees vary by mission, so confirm the current amount and how to pay with the Doha embassy before you attend. The 48-page book is worth considering if you travel frequently between Qatar, Ghana and other Gulf states, as entry and exit stamps accumulate quickly.

Lost or Stolen Passports in Qatar

If your passport is lost or stolen anywhere in Qatar, act in this order:

• Report to the Qatari police. File a report at the police station covering the area where the loss occurred, or through the Ministry of Interior’s Metrash app where available. The police report (with an official reference) is essential — the embassy cannot process a replacement or travel document without evidence the loss was reported.
• Tell your sponsor or employer. Because your QID is linked to your passport, your sponsor will need to be involved when the replacement arrives and immigration records are updated.
• Contact the embassy. Bring the police report, two passport photographs, and any proof of identity you still hold — a photocopy of the lost passport, your Ghana Card, or a Ghanaian driver’s licence. Keeping digital copies of your passport data page on your phone and email is strongly recommended for exactly this situation.

A full replacement passport still takes the standard 6–8 weeks via Accra. If you must travel to Ghana urgently before it arrives, ask about an Emergency Travel Certificate instead.

Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC)

The embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Certificate within 24–48 hours for genuine emergencies — typically a one-way document allowing you to return to Ghana. You will need your police report (for lost/stolen cases), two photographs, proof of identity and the applicable fee (approximately $30–50 USD; confirm with the mission). Note that an ETC gets you to Ghana; it does not restore your Qatari residence status, so speak to your sponsor about re-entry arrangements before you fly out of Hamad International Airport.

First Passports and Children Born in Qatar

Children born in Qatar to at least one Ghanaian parent are Ghanaian citizens by descent and can be issued their own passports. Qatar does not grant citizenship by birth on its soil to children of foreign workers, so obtaining Ghanaian documents promptly matters: your child will need a passport to be added to your sponsorship and to travel. Register the birth with the embassy first (see our citizenship services guide), then apply for the child’s passport with the Qatari birth certificate, the consular birth registration, both parents’ passports and photographs of the child. Children must attend biometric capture in person, whatever their age.

Practical Tips for Applicants in Qatar

• Photograph requirements are strict: white background, no head covering except for religious purposes, neutral expression. Doha photo studios in areas like Al Sadd and the Souq Waqif vicinity are familiar with international passport standards — tell them it is for a Ghana passport.
• The Ghana Card is increasingly tied to passport issuance. If you have never registered with the National Identification Authority, ask the embassy about registration options in Doha or plan to register on your next visit to Ghana.
• Apply outside peak periods where possible. Demand spikes before Hajj season, Christmas and the summer exodus, when many Ghanaians in the Gulf travel home.
• If you live outside Doha — Al Khor, Dukhan, Mesaieed — confirm your appointment is firmly booked before making the trip, and check current counter hours with the embassy.
