Ghana Right to Abode 2026

The Right to Abode is a residency status granted by the Ghana Immigration Service to former Ghanaian citizens and people of African descent in the diaspora, allowing permanent residence, work, and visa-free entry to Ghana.

Who Qualifies?

Two categories of people qualify for the Ghana Right to Abode:

1. Former Ghanaian Citizens

A person who was a Ghanaian citizen by birth, adoption, registration, or naturalization but lost their Ghanaian citizenship upon acquiring foreign nationality.

2. Persons of African Descent in the Diaspora

A person whose immediate forebears (ancestors) have resided outside the African continent for at least three generations but whose origin, either by documentary proof or by ethnic characteristics, is African.

The Right to Abode was introduced as part of Ghana's "Year of Return" initiative (2019) and the "Beyond the Return" programme, welcoming diaspora Africans to reconnect with the continent.

Benefits of Right to Abode

  • Permanent Residence: Live in Ghana indefinitely without a visa or residence permit
  • Visa-Free Entry: Enter and leave Ghana freely without requiring a visa
  • Right to Work: Work or be employed in Ghana without a work permit
  • Right to Own Business: Start and operate a business in Ghana
  • Access to Services: Access healthcare, education, and other public services

Right to Abode does NOT confer Ghanaian citizenship. You cannot vote, hold public office, or obtain a Ghana passport through Right to Abode alone. For citizenship, see Dual Citizenship or apply for naturalisation.

You can submit your application through a Ghana embassy abroad for forwarding to the Ghana Immigration Service. However, you may need to attend an interview in Accra. Many applicants choose to visit Ghana to submit the application in person and complete the interview process.

Each family member must apply individually. Spouses and children over 18 need their own applications. Children under 18 may be included on a parent application. There is no automatic extension of Right to Abode to family members.
