Elmina - Castle, Fishing Harbour & Colonial Heritage

Elmina is home to the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa -- Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482. This small fishing town just 15 minutes from Cape Coast combines a harrowing slave trade history with one of Ghana most photogenic and vibrant harbours.

Top Attractions

1. Elmina Castle (St. George Castle) -- UNESCO World Heritage Site

Built by the Portuguese in 1482, Elmina Castle is the oldest European building south of the Sahara. Originally a gold trading post, it became a major slave trading fortress under the Dutch. Tour the dungeons, governor quarters, and the infamous Door of No Return. The contrast between the dungeon darkness and the sea-view governor quarters is deeply unsettling and educational.

A wonderful place to photograph daily life, interact with fishermen, and experience coastal Ghanaian culture.

3. Fort St. Jago (Fort Coenraadsburg)

A Dutch-built fort on the hilltop above Elmina Castle, offering spectacular panoramic views of the castle, harbour, town, and ocean. Much quieter than the castle and often overlooked by tourists. Entry: GHS 10.

4. Coconut Grove Beach Resort

A beachfront resort with a pool, restaurant, and lovely stretch of beach. A good base for exploring Elmina and Cape Coast. Even if not staying, the beach bar is a relaxing spot for sunset drinks.
